Steam and hot water need different questions.
Is this steam or hot-water (hydronic) heat? Ask the professional to confirm from existing records; radiators alone do not distinguish them. Do not inspect hot equipment. A boiler may also supply domestic hot water through a coil, indirect tank or combi arrangement; ask what the proposed work changes.
Steam
What connected-radiation survey (EDR), boiler steam rating, and manufacturer sizing basis support the proposed capacity? How are near-boiler piping, returns, venting and water-level controls addressed?
Ask whether this is one-pipe or two-pipe steam and what distribution faults remain outside the boiler work. A furnace airflow checklist does not apply.
Hot water / hydronic
What calculated home heat loss, emitter output at the proposed water temperatures, and zone/circulator compatibility support the boiler selection? How are expansion, air removal and water quality addressed?
For a condensing boiler, ask how the proposed operating temperatures and emitters support its expected performance. An efficiency label alone cannot establish household savings.
Claim → evidence → uncertainty
“The boiler needs replacing” is a reported recommendation. Ask for the affected component, test method, recorded results and limitations. A leak at a valve or fitting is different from a confirmed boiler-block leak. Noise, short cycling, age and uneven heat can have several causes.
“What finding supports this recommendation, what alternatives did you evaluate, and what would remain unresolved?”
Written findings are more specific information to discuss; they are not independently verified by this page. Repeating a claim across quotes is not independent corroboration. Use existing records without approaching equipment. When findings conflict, ask an independent qualified boiler professional to document an on-site assessment.
Six points to clarify in writing.
Equipment and sizing
Exact model, fuel and system type; documented steam radiation or hydronic heat-loss basis. Matching the old rating or using square footage alone is not a sizing assessment.
Piping and heat delivery
What piping, returns, circulators, zones, vents and controls are included or reused? What compatibility checks support reuse? A replacement boiler may not fix distribution faults.
Venting and combustion air
Who confirms vent/chimney suitability, combustion air, gas or oil supply compatibility and manufacturer requirements? Include condensate drainage and treatment where applicable; these are professional tasks.
Safety and completion records
Who provides manufacturer-required startup and safety-control checks, combustion/venting verification where applicable, and completion documentation? The listed scope does not prove those checks occurred.
Related work and exclusions
Removal, permits and inspections, electrical work, disposal, restoration, domestic-hot-water arrangements and conditional extras. Ask who confirms local requirements and obtains approval before added charges.
Options, coverage and total cost
Compare suitable repair with replacement: installed cost, actual parts availability, expected outcome and equipment/labor warranties. Request cash total and full financing terms. No regional price verdict, payback or guaranteed service life is inferred.
